#BlackComicsMonth – Day 2 – Blacks in Comics – Misty Knight

Meet hero for hire, Misty Knight. Misty Knight is a Marvel Comics character, created by Tony Isabella and Arvell Jones. She made her first appearance (by name) in Marvel Premiere #20(1972). Misty Knight’s first actual appearance is in Marvel Teamup #1 in March, 1972. Knight was strongly based on the Kung fu and blaxploitation crazes of the 1970s.

Misty was a police officer with the NYPD, who lost her arm while preventing a bomb attack. Instead of taking a desk job, knight quit the force. Tony Stark gave Misty a bionic arm, which gave her super strength. Knight continued to fight crime, now as a super hero and private investigator.

She has teamed with many different super heroes, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men, Coleen Wing, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. She has had an on again, off again relationship with Iron Fist. (Could we end up seeing Misty Knight in the Netflix Iron Fist series?)

Misty has been a part of, or run, Heroes For Hire over the years. This service, started by Luke Cage and Iron Fist, provides heroes, for a price.

Misty Knight last appeared in the Marvel NOW! Fearless Defenders series that launched April 2013. Pick up the last series featuring Misty Knight.

Misty Knight is definitely a character that I would like to see come back to comic book store shelves! When I visit comic conventions, I see so many beautiful black women rocking Afros and embracing Misty Knight cosplay. If you have any Misty Knight cosplay pictures, send them I’d love to feature you on VixenVarsity!
